nathan masserang — so stupid and shitty: akira 'review'

So stupid and shitty: Akira ‘review’
by Nathan Masserang

I finished all six books of Akira in ~48 hours and then a few weeks later watched the movie. Honestly hated every character because mostly they represented all the shitty and stupid things that all shitty and stupid people do. Kept seeing people from contemporary culture in the characters from the book and thinking ‘these people can’t possibly be any more stupid or shitty than people today because there is a twenty plus year gap between this book and now.’ Had this image of stupidity and shittiness on an inflation curve and thought that maybe stupid and shitty people become more so over time.

Kim-Jong Whatever is a stupid and shitty person just like Akira. They are both puerile and stupid. They are stupid and shitty. They both throw tantrums and kill people. That is stupid and shitty. They hurt people because they are hurt or something. I don’t know, but I made that connection and it seems important. Unsure who Akira’s parents are but I can imagine that they are just as stupid and shitty as Kim-Jong Something’s parents were, and their parents before that and on and on. Feel as though they were conditioned to be stupid and shitty and they make people around them stupid and shitty. Furthermore, they both are volatile people who want to destroy things in very stupid and shitty ways like the stupid and shitty people they are.

Think that Akira is a good post-WWII reactionary account. It highlights how people all over the world are stupid and shitty. There Americans in Akira and they are more stupid and shitty than a lot of other people in the books. They try and use chemical warfare and objectify people they do not understand, which is a stupid and shitty thing to do. One American is warned to not do chemical warfare or whatever. His response is in essence, ‘no, I need to kill this person oh god I’m so stupid and shitty.’ Feel like his tone is a bit contrived but okay. He gets killed when trying to do chemical warfare, which is funny because Americans are more often than not portrayed as stupid and shitty people for pretty much everything. Everyone becomes a realistic stupid and shitty person rather than an exaggerated character in a novel or movie. It becomes real, stupid and shitty all at once.

Thinking about the whole nuclear bomb thing and World War II and Kim-Jong IDK and was like ‘oh man, America was really stupid and shitty. Millions of people died and it is horrifying.’ Tried to find out more about relief effort given to Japan post bomb droppings and found a little bit of info but not nearly as much as the destruction of both bombs. Think that the scientists in Akira were supposed to be the one of the only relief efforts that was there in real life, which is stupid and shitty. The president or somebody sent scientists to examine the effects on people after the disaster in both the book and real life. Seems stupid and shitty. Send money, food, water, people, something. Instead you are just looking at it and being stupid and shitty. Even in the book when relief efforts did come to Japan, everyone said that they didn’t want it, which is stupid and shitty. Someone is finally doing something nice and people are being stupid and shitty, I don’t get it. Akira became a concept well after WWII, and part of me wants to tell people that these stupid and shitty people will always happen and get over it but then I feel like a stupid and shitty person. It’s a never ending cycle of stupid and shitty. Oh god, please help.

Think it is interesting that this book, and particularly the movie, makes everyone stupid and shitty. They are rude and mean and stupid and shitty. The movie takes a lot of the more powerful and ‘good’ characters and makes them into stupid and shitty people. Unsure if this was intentional, but it seems sad. They just become people who are filled with a much directed avarice and contempt for something. The movie is not as good as the book because it doesn’t recognize that stupid and shitty people will always live among us. Akira represents the ideal stupid shitty person. In the movie, you see him for like, 5 seconds right after the giant baby blob kills some girl. It’s weird. Feel like the viewer needs to not pity Akira in his ‘I’m just a kid and life in a nightmare being a guinea pig for the government or something’ state, because he still was a stupid and shitty kid. You can rage against the machine without killing millions of people.

Feel like things would be better if we just acknowledged how stupid and shitty we are. This is not to say, ‘oh man let’s all get along and not be stupid and shitty to one another,’ because that’s a stupid and shitty thing to say. I don’t know why people are stupid and shitty to one another. The motives of stupid and shitty people will never be known, the world just has to see its result and deal with it and that is extremely stupid and shitty. When I started writing this, the bombing at the Boston Marathon had just happened, which is very stupid and shitty. People said it was Kim-Jong Fuckit, because he does stupid and shitty things. But then it turned out to be two guys from Russia or something. They are stupid and shitty and we were all looking in the other direction because we are so stupid and shitty and expect the proven stupid and shitty people to do things. It’s very confusing.

The book ends on a positive note: ‘Akira lives’ in everyone and rely on your friends to keep you grounded and safe. Yeah. Most people, no, everyone is stupid and shitty. We don’t recognize it all the time, but we have all done stupid and shitty things in our lives. Billions compounded on billions of stupid and shitty things. Making friends is hard. I don’t have many friends. This is probably because I’d rather spend my time and energy on not making friends. This is not to say that I hate people too much to make friends; rather, I find people stupid and shitty. I am afraid of that: The stupid and shitty in everyone, blowing up like small big bangs simultaneously, a rolling shockwave of stupid and shitty devastating people in the process. Maybe I’m afraid of the stupid and shitty in myself. Feel unsure. Feel slightly stupid and shitty.
